Breeding Allay in Minecraft: Explained (2022)

Allay’s breeding process is different from any in-game mob. So, we first need to collect and craft some rare items, and only then will we be able to breed the Allay in Minecraft. Note: Some of the mechanics in this guide are based on the latest Minecraft Snapshot 22w24a and might change in the official release of the next minor Minecraft 1.19 update.

What Is an Allay in Minecraft

In case you haven’t met the Allay yet, it is a small passive mob in Minecraft that spawns in pillager cages. Once freed, the Allay flies around until a player hands it an item.

How to Tame an Allay in Minecraft

Technically speaking, you can’t tame an Allay in Minecraft. But if you want this mob to follow you around just like tamed mobs, you have to hand Allay an item. You can use any common item like a button or even rare items like a diamond to get the job done.
However, when you take the item back from the Allay, it will fly away and stop following you. Alternatively, you can also use a lead on Allay to prevent it from running away even when it’s not holding an item. You can also choose to swap out and hand Allay another item to keep it around.

How to Get a Music Disc

How to Duplicate Allay in Minecraft

The breeding process for Allays consists of two parts: dancing and duplication. Let’s go over each of them separately to breed our Allay in Minecraft.

How to Make Allay Dance in Minecraft

Thanks to their connection with note blocks, it’s no secret that Allays loves music. This remains true even when we try to make copies of the Allay. So, to begin its duplication process, you have to bring an Allay close to a jukebox and play a music disc. As soon as the Allay hears music, it starts dancing around the jukebox until the music stops.
The Allay sways left and right and spins around to the beats of the music, as shown in the GIF above. This dancing mechanic only activates if the Allay is within a 10-block radius of the jukebox.

Duplicate Allay with Amethyst Shard

Once the Allay starts dancing, it won’t get away from you, even if it’s not holding an item or isn’t tied with a lead. So, you can let it fly about and dance freely. Then, give an amethyst shard to your dancing Allay.
Instead of holding the amethyst shard, the Allay will duplicate itself, consuming the shard in the process. So yeah, you don’t need to have two Allays to breed them in Minecraft. They are self-sufficient. If you give the amethyst shard to a non-dancing Allay, it just holds the item and tries to look for its copies. So, you must hand the shard to Allay before the music stops. Then once the new Allay spawns, you can give both of them random items to hold, and they will not fly away even when the music stops.
Can I breed the same Allay again in Minecraft? Once an Allay is duplicated, you must wait at least 2.5 minutes before duplicating it again.
How many Allays do you need for breeding? Unlike the breeding process for other mobs, you don’t need two Allays for the duplication process. You only need one dancing Allay to create its duplicate. What is the difference between duplication and breeding? Breeding is the process of creating a baby variant of a mob in Minecraft, and it involves the presence of two adult mobs. However, in the process of duplication, you only need one mob. It creates a fully grown version of the same mob.
What does Allay eat? Even though it helps with duplication, an amethyst shard is not a food item for Allay. So, it can’t heal the Allay. Though, thanks to Allay’s auto-healing ability, it doesn’t need any food anyways. So, in other words, Allay doesn’t eat anything in Minecraft.
How to tame Allay in Minecraft? You need to give an item to the Allay and its duplicate to immediately make them follow you around.
Which music disc makes the Allay dance? Allay loves music but doesn’t have a particular taste. You can use any music disc in a Minecraft jukebox to make it dance. It even dances on the grim “music disc 5,” which is the source of various speculations around the Ancient city portal.
