Gun Devil in Chainsaw Man: Facts Overview (2022)
Spoiler Warning: Several facts in our guide contain major spoilers for the plot of Chainsaw Man’s Public Safety Arc. We suggest watching the Chainsaw Man anime or reading the manga, at least till chapter 97, to avoid hampering the intended experience.
1. Gun Devil is Not the Real Villian
The biggest curveball of Chainsaw Man’s first arc comes in the form of the control devil, aka Makima. After telling us that the gun devil is the main antagonist for dozens of chapters (& episodes), the Chainsaw Man franchise reveals that the control devil is the real big bad. She even tries to kill the gun devil at one point but fails. The gun devil escapes her wrath in the form of the gun fiend, which leads us to an unfortunate turn of events.
2. Causes Saddest Plot Twist of Chainsaw Man
We learn early on that the gun devil is the ultimate enemy of Aki Hayakawa. Aki spends all his time thinking about locating this devil and taking him down to avenge his family. But fate has something completely different in store, and the gun devil takes over Aki’s corpse, turning him into the gun fiend. Such a heartbreaking twist of fate leaves us with one of the most beloved CSM characters turning into his most dreaded enemy.
3. Gun Devil is the World’s Fastest Killer
Staying true to his name, the gun devil is as fast as a moving bullet when it comes to killing. As revealed in Chapter 13 of Chainsaw Man’s manga, the gun devil killed almost 1.2 million people within only five minutes. This incident took place across the globe affecting various countries, including Japan, China, the USA, and even India. Such attack speed and precision are now unheard of, even by veteran devil hunters.
4. The Gun Devil Takes Money from Humans
While making a contract with humans, all the other devils have strange requests. For example, Pochita, the chainsaw devil asked for Denji‘s dreams, the future devil requested to live in Aki’s right eye, and the curse devil eats up Aki’s lifespan. However, no one except the gun devil cares about human material possessions like money.
In Chainsaw Man manga Chapter 33, we learn that the gun devil charges 20,000 yen from his contractors to provide them with firearms and bullets. Though, we are as clueless as the gangsters as to what a devil would use the money for.
5. His Body Pieces Enhance the Power of Other Devils
It is common knowledge at this point that eating flesh and drinking blood allows the devil to heal itself. But the gun devil’s flesh is more special than other devils. As revealed by Makima in Chapter 13, if another devil eats the flesh of the gun devil, their powers are greatly enhanced. It doesn’t matter what kind of powers the devil who ate the pieces had.
Though, we are not entirely sure how the same flesh affects fiends and humans. If you want to try uncovering that, we’d suggest you first fully understand the differences between hybrids, fiends, and devils in Chainsaw Man.
6. Gun Devil Killed AoT, One Piece, and Bleach Creators
In Chapters 75 and 76 of the Chainsaw Man manga, we get to see various lists featuring the names of the gun devil’s victims. As a hooked reader, you might skip the victim list as random information and want to quickly get to the action bits. But when you look closely, the list includes the names of a few popular mangakas. Now, we don’t know if Tatsuki Fujimoto, the author of Chainsaw Man, has some rivalry with them, but a few famous manga artists are dead in the CSM world. Here are a few of the famous mangakas who die in Chainsaw Man because of the gun devil’s attack:
Kohei Horikoshi, creator of My Hero AcademiaEiichiro Oda, creator of One PieceHajime Isayama, creator of Attack on TitanTite Kubo, creator of Bleach
7. Readers Are Not Fond of the Gun Devil
Even with his powerful history and world-obliterating abilities, the gun devil failed to make his way into the hearts of manga fans. At least, that’s what the popularity polls suggest.
In both official character popularity polls, the gun devil sat at the bottom end of the list. He only gathered 97 votes and landed in the 53rd spot in the first popularity poll. His positioning barely improves in the second poll, with him being in the 50th place with 435 votes, but that’s nothing compared to the rest of the characters.
8. Can’t Kill Living Things Born in April, July, or October
As weird as it might sound, Chapter 76 of Chainsaw Man manga discloses that the gun devil has certain restrictions on his powers. He can’t harm anyone born in April, July, or October. This is, at least, true in the context of his activation ability through which the gun devil can fire a bullet through a living creature within a one-kilometer distance of himself.
Thanks to a theory on the Chainsaw Man Wiki, we know why there is such an expectation. The Japanese word for April (Shigatsu) and July (Shichigatsu) have the term “shi,” which means death. Similarly, October (Jūgatsu), has the word ” jū” which means gun in Japanese.
Giving a subtle tribute to such terminology, Tatsuki Fujimoto, who was born in October, gave a special immunity to himself by not allowing the gun devil to kill those born in those three months. But even this superior treatment can’t prevent people from gun devil’s other abilities. The blasts and destruction he causes can easily kill people born in the immune months as indirect casualties.
9. He Survived the Attack of Seven Devils at Once
Towards the end of the first arc of Chainsaw Man, the gun devil is attacked by Makima with the power of six other devils. At this point, the gun devil being attacked is made up of only 20% of his body (owned by the US). Still, he not just survives the direct attack but is able to escape by taking over a dead devil hunter’s corpse and turning into the gun fiend. We can only imagine how powerful he might have been with 100% of his body.
10. Gun Devil Can’t Be Killed in Chainsaw Man
If you are going through these facts sequentially, you must be aware of the fact that fighting the gun devil isn’t a simple task. But thanks to his brilliant mind, in the current scenario, it’s impossible to kill him as well. Chapter 73 states that the gun devil’s body is divided into several parts, which are in possession of governments across the globe.
As revealed in the manga, 20% of the gun devil’s body is owned by the United States, 28% by the Soviet Union, 11% by China, and 4% by other nations. Meanwhile, the remaining 37% is randomly scattered around the world or is in possession of devil hunters.
As you might remember, 20% of this distribution turned into the gun fiend and died at the hands of Chainsaw Man. But the rest of the gun devil is still alive. Not to forget, the existing 20% can get reincarnated into the human world, like other devils, by dying in hell. So, from the looks of it, one has to get all pieces of the gun devil together and kill him at his highest potential to completely eliminate him.
Taking the current global political scenario into consideration, that doesn’t look possible any time soon. Though, Denji (aka Chainsaw Man) consuming these pieces might be a reliable alternative.
